We Support the One World Futbol Project

“A child can play to their heart’s content where there are no content hearts”

If there’s one sport that can unite people across cultures and continents, its soccer. Every kid, regardless of where they live, deserves a chance to play. In many areas around the world, kids are so driven to play soccer that they’ll bind plastic bags with twine, or play with empty plastic bottles. Even if they can find a traditional inflatable soccer ball, they aren’t durable enough to withstand play in streets, villages, and pastures and end up deflating within days. The One World Futbol Project has created a ball that never needs a pump, and can be punctured multiple times while still retaining its shape and bounce. We just bought four balls to be sent to kids around the world, and ordered one to play with here at home.

Growing in the Garage

Jason had been helping me here and there with overflow work for about a year before joining Burlington Bytes full time in early June. Since then, we’ve spent our summer working out of a detached garage in the back of his property. The previous owner ran a business rebuilding race car engines out of the garage, so we’ve been putting in a lot of elbow grease to get it fixed up.

Today our table/bar arrived from Vermont Farm Table and it occurred to me just how far we’ve come in the past couple months. We’ve pressure washed the grease out of the floors, painted all the walls and ceiling, removed some old work counters and replaced them with whiteboards, replaced the fluorescent shop lighting, and much more. This weekend we’re painting and sealing the floor and getting some rugs, as well as installing an additional window. We’re waiting on a living room set that should arrive next week, and are having an insulated garage door with windows installed. From there, we’be just got to get the propane tank filled, and we should be ready for winter. I’m not sure how we’re going to keep two dogs amused once we have to keep the doors closed…

Before

After

“A lot of great businesses started out in garages.”
-Says Everyone
Its been interesting working out of a garage all summer, especially meeting clients here. We constantly hear variations of the same comment when people stop by: “A lot of great businesses started in garages.” At first it was a little embarrassing, but now that its looking more like a startup’s office, I’m really starting to embrace the paradigm that we apparently embody to our clients. Its nice to think that people are appreciating the technology and marketing skills that we’re bringing to our clients, and think we have the potential to be the next big thing. I started this little business in a spare bedroom in my home, now we’re putting together a team and adding space in the garage, and hopefully next summer we’ll be looking into moving into a nice commercial space. Anyway… time to stop rambling and get back to work. Thanks for reading! – Pete

Its really rewarding to grow our business by growing our clients’ businesses.

Stop by the garage and say Hi!

New Co-Owner @ Burlington Bytes

Allow me to introduce myself as the newest member and recent co-owner of Burlington Bytes, Jason Di Vece. It’s been a little over six weeks now since leaving the corporate environment to join forces with Pete in the start-up world… and it has been invigorating to say the least. But how did it come to this? The decision to leave the cozy confines of a large Internet marketing agency was not an easy one.

Opportunity was knocking, as they say, and having spent a year teaching English in Korea, the adventurous aspect of co-owning a business was also appealing. Ultimately though, it came down to really believing in what Pete was doing with Burlington Bytes. I had been collaborating with him on a number of previous web design projects, and was able to help the business gain momentum over the course of about a year. It was apparent very early that this combination of affordable website design and proven Internet Marketing skills, had a real chance of taking off. The obvious question soon followed, “What if I could do this full time?” One year later… here I am, and it feels awesome.

Burlington Young Professional Group Golf Tournament – VICTORY!

We don’t want to brag, but it feels so good to win once in a while. Since we didn’t see this in the Freep today, I thought I should write a blog post. The Burlington Bytes golf team, consisting of Pete Bruhn, Seth Traub, Tyler Hughes, and myself, took home a bottle of Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey after our victory at The Links at Lang Farm yesterday. Big thanks to The Links and the BYPG for putting on the event which benefited Hunger Free VT.

Burlington Free Press – Thanksgiving Edition Offer From BBytes

Show me your print advertising From the Thanksgiving Edition of the Burlington Free Press and get $500 off a new website.

The Burlington Free Press is boasting that their Thanksgiving day paper is going to be “Over 900 pages including 772 pages of ads and 42 inserts”.  Its great business for them, but we should think about the diminishing impact of this technique on your business.

  • a.) Who is going to browse through all 772 pages of ads?
  • b.) Do you think anyone is going to remember your business after?
  • c.) How many customers do you need to get from this ad to see a return on your investment (ROI)?

We can build you a professional website that ranks at the top of page 1 when people search for your product or service on Google; a much better place to advertise than on page 453 of a single Free Press edition.

If your business, or a business of a friend paid good money to get buried in this edition, give me a call about getting a proper website, search optimization, and local marketing set up for your business.  Our sites start at $2500, show me your Thanksgiving Free Press ad and I’ll take $500 off your project’s cost.

I hate seeing businesses waste their advertising budget. Please share on Twitter and with your Facebook friends.

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Update – June 6

Hi All,

Here’s an update of what’s happening at Burlington Bytes.   I’m working on the deck (weather permitting) and generally enjoying the summer weather.   Otis is also enjoying the outdoor office.

Website in a Week Launch: www.StanThePlumber.com

I’ve launched www.stantheplumber.com for Plumb Perfect LLC in Burlington, VT.   It really came together nicely, I’m looking forward to seeing how it ranks for local terms like ‘Plumber in Burlington”.  We’ll know in a few weeks once it’s been indexed by Google.   A huge thanks to Stanley Selig, I’m looking forward to working with your business.

Website in a Week Start: Wisehart, Wimette, & Associates

This week’s website in a week client is Wisehart, Wimette, & Associates,  an accounting firm in Essex Junction, VT.  We’re putting together a website to advertise their personal, business, and nonprofit accounting services. It’ll have an secure ftp area for uploads, it should be a fun challenge putting that together.  Tune in for the results next week.
