Hey Maine, we’re coming back home!

Every time I meet a new client they ask where my accent is from.  No, I’m not from Boston, I’m from Maine.

My co-founder and I were both born and raised in Maine.  We met while attending Champlain College in Burlington, and chose the “West Coast” as the location to start our business and our families.  Over the past 7 years, Burlington Bytes has grown to a team of 22 with a portfolio of over 300 clients.  When we started discussing how to expand into new markets, setting up shop in Portland was the obvious choice.  When we found a spot in the State Theatre, it was a done deal. We love Maine, and we’re planning on racking up some major mileage on Route 2 in the coming years.

Here’s a rundown of the services that we offer to businesses and organizations of any size:

Website Design & Development

We typically focus our website design and development on two core open-source platforms.  95% of our websites are built on WordPress, the other 5% are large e-commerce stores built on Magento.  Our websites are beautiful and functional, if you can dream it up, we can write the code.  Whether you need a simple lead generation site, or a complex enterprise website with API integrations, we’re your team.  We also frequently partner up with marketing departments and agencies to do their technical heavy lifting on projects.

Website Hosting & Support

We can host websites at any scale and have a support team at the ready to keep your website updated and help out with any problems that might arise.   We have a variety of packages to suit any business, from cost-effective cloud hosting to on-demand enterprise server clusters.  You can rest assured that we’ll keep your website backed-up, secure, and loading lightning fast.  We’ve worked with a client to host their website while they pitched on Shark Tank, and we handled the server configuration for live streaming of the 2017 Maine High School Basketball Tournament.

Digital Advertising & Marketing

Our digital marketing team will drive traffic to your website with SEO, and paid advertising platforms like Google AdWords and Facebook Ads. We offer A/B testing services to help you maximize your website’s ROI, and prove our results with custom reporting in Google Analytics.  Let’s drive more visitors to your website, and convert those visitors into paying customers.

Nudity on Church Street

Nudity on Church Street

We spotted a nude man strolling on Church Street yesterday and posted it to Facebook, various media outlets stopped by the office today to get a comment.  Our leadership team has issued the following official statement…

Media Outlets,

Thank you for stopping by the Burlington Bytes office earlier today.  We apologize no one was in at the time to give an official statement on how the nude man on the street yesterday was impacting our Church Street business.  Upon your inquiry, we immediately formed an exploratory committee to determine how this situation could happen, and how we could prevent more au naturale pedestrians from wandering Church Street in the future.

The findings of our exploratory committee were striking.  While theories ranging from the man being an Emperor, to being the lost “UVM naked bike rider of 1969” were offered, we believe this was a case of an uninformed consumer.  Clearly this “in the buff” man had been searching online for clothes, and due to poor SEO, Google Adwords, and retargeting campaigns by local haberdasheries, he simply did not know where to buy clothes.  Our committee offered the following as a solution: If more local retailers had purchased Burlington Bytes’ digital marketing packages, consumers would be more informed, and we could reduce Church Street nudity by a staggering 76%.

Retailers interested in pursuing this noble option are encouraged to reach out to Pete Jewett at pete@burlingtonbytes.com for a free consultation

Big welcome to our new CEO, Andrew Stickney

Big welcome to our new CEO, Andrew Stickney

When I jumped out of Dealer.com with three clients in late 2010, a lot of people thought I was crazy.  With a baby on the way, I really had to pitch my wife on the vision.  I more or less ignored the rest of the naysayers, set up a desk in my spare bedroom and started putting in work.

In 2012,  my business partner, Jason, also made his exit from Dealer.com. We set up shop in his garage in the Old North End with two desks, two dogs, and about a dozen clients. Topher came on board to help us manage our growing advertising product a few months later.  Then came our first “developer”, a Champlain College Computer Science major who worked as our intern.

Spring of 2014,  Jason and his wife were starting to get tired of us parking in their driveway, using their bathroom, and working in the garage until late at night.  So we got our office on Church St and started painting and decorating and trying to make it look like “a real business”.   Our growth has continued to accelerate and we’ve pretty much maxed out the amount of staff we can fit in this office.  We’re up to 15 full-time staff and just over 200 clients that we work with on a regular basis.  Business is booming.

Jason and I are both in total agreement that we want to keep our foot on the pedal here.  Sometime last fall I started to realize that Burlington Bytes had outgrown my business management capabilities.  I can sell and build websites all day long, but I definitely get bored and fall short when it comes to spreadsheets, income statements, projections, state programs, human resou…… yawn. I just can’t do it.

Deciding to hire a CEO was the biggest business decision I’ve made since founding Burlington Bytes, deciding who to hire was pretty simple. A big welcome to Andrew Stickney, our new CEO.   Andrew was the VP of VCET for 5 years, and we’d meet every year or so to chat about Burlington Bytes. He’s worked with countless startups and has a unique understanding of how startups become mature businesses.  I was thrilled when he was excited about the prospect of joining Burlington Bytes, and after a few months of conversations, he’s officially on board.

I was admittedly nervous about handing over business management responsibilities before Andrew’s first day .  Two weeks in, and its apparent that this is one of the best moves I could have made to invest in the future success of Burlington Bytes.   Enough blogging, back to work, let’s keep the numbers doubling.

Another year, another WordPress default theme.

Another year, another WordPress default theme.

At Burlington Bytes, we’re primarily a WordPress shop.  We do everything from building websites, to hosting and supporting websites, to building custom WordPress themes and plugins.  We love WordPress because its simple enough for a layperson to build a website, but extensible enough for our designers and developers to build almost anything we can imagine.

When you first download and install WordPress on your server, the first big question is “What do I want this site to look like?”  WordPress uses a theming system to handle the visual appearance of a site. Right out of the box WordPress will ship with a few different default themes from previous years, named after their respective year.  If you’re not struck by any of the default themes, you can find free WordPress themes in the WordPress Theme Directory, or purchase “Premium” themes on a marketplace like Themeforest.  At Burlington Bytes, we’ll sometimes start with a free or purchased theme and customize it for our client using a Child Theme.  More and more, we’ve been designing and developing totally custom themes using our own Bootstrap starter theme which lets us build responsive websites very efficiently.

Themes are built following a very specific format, using a combination of PHP, HTML, CSS, and JS.  The best way to learn how to build and modify themes is to set up a WordPress and dig in.   If you’re on a live site, you should make a “development” copy of your site to avoid knocking the site offline if you make an error.  You’re going to want to use a FTP program such as Filezilla, we don’t recommend ever using the built-in file editor.  Take frequent backups so you can restore, or better yet, use git or another form of version control.

Twenty Sixteen is this year’s default theme and is currently running on 600,000 active websites.  If you know what to look for, you’re going to see this theme all over the web for the next couple years.

Twenty Sixteen is responsive, with a mobile-first design.  Instead of being built for laptops/desktops with functionality to scale it down, this theme is built with mobile devices as the primary intended audience, and will scale up for laptops/desktops.  This is becoming a popular method of development as mobile usage continues to grow rapidly.

Twenty Sixteen is built for all audiences.  The theme has been deemed “Accessibility ready”, meaning its built to be accessible to audiences that may have disabilities.  According to the W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative, there’s a lot that needs to be considered, from how the site zooms, how well it can be parsed by a screen-reading program, and a host of other auditory, cognitive, neurological  and physical considerations.   Twenty Sixteen is also RTL translation-ready, meaning it can be easily translated into a variety of languages for global audiences.

Finally, Twenty Sixteen is just another step in the WordPress community’s continual work towards being a platform that is approachable for all audiences.  It has a variety of color schemes built in, and is incredibly to use for anyone to get a website up and running with a minimal knowledge of code.  We’d encourage you to jump in head-first and start building.  If you break something, or want to take your website to the next-level, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team of WordPress experts at Burlington Bytes.

Experienced LAMP Developer Wanted

We’re looking for an experienced LAMP developer to join our team full-time. Experience in WordPress is ideal, but not necessary if you’re capable of learning. We also do some Magento work, so experience on that platform would also be great. Work will be on one large project to start, and then a wide variety of projects as they come up. We have over 150 clients and advertise pretty heavily, so you’ll never know what’s next. Your work will be almost exclusively for the web, and it would be great to have a mix of front-end and back-end experience. Back-end examples would be migrating inventory between systems, setting up custom WP ad panels, dynamically creating product ads from products. Front-end work includes styling up responsive designs, using JS to make things move around on the screen, google mapping (maybe this is more back-end?) and much more. We’ve got a team of 11 with three experienced developers, so you’ll be in good company.

We have a fun office with a growing team and rapidly growing business, send your resume to careers@burlingtonbytes.com if you’re interested.
