Employee Spotlight: Meet Jon Schwadron our Newest Team Member

Employee Spotlight: Meet Jon Schwadron our Newest Team Member

Careers News

We are excited to announce that Jon Schwadron has joined the Burlington Bytes team as a Technical Engineer and Developer. Formerly a Software Engineer at robotics firm Replica Labs out of Boulder, CO, Schwadron’s experience and skillset will add new depth to the development team as it grows. Jon’s programming languages include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, Django, Ruby on Rails among others. He studied to be a Full Stack Developer at General Assembly in NY.

“This exciting opportunity with Burlington Bytes is the role & firm that attracted me to the area”, said Schwadron on his career move.  “Between the incredible culture of teamwork, growth, and improvement, coupled with everything the Vermont lifestyle has to offer, made moving here an easy decision.”

“We continue to add people at a rapid clip” said founder Peter Jewett, “and attracting talent like Jon from other states and firms is a huge win for Burlington Bytes and the Vermont technology ecosystem”.

Now that we’ve introduced Jon and his role at BBytes, let’s get to know him on a more personal level.

It’s “Employee Spotlight” time! Here’s our Q&A with him…

Q: How did you first learn about Burlington Bytes?

Jon: Craigslist! At first I was skeptical… but the post they made looked really professional for a craigslist post. I went ahead and emailed them my resume along with Linkedin. I got a quick response and got an interview!

Q: Where did you work before BBytes?

Jon: Replica Labs in Boulder, CO via remote from New York. It was a volunteer thing and their technology is fascinating; 3D scanning with your smartphone. Replica Labs is now acquired by another computer vision company, I wish them all the best!

Q: What is the favorite part about working here?

Jon: Humorous and friendly environment. Dogs everywhere. The smell of coffee brew all day long.

Q: What do you find the most challenging about working at Burlington Bytes?

Jon: Since I’m new to both Burlington Bytes and Vermont, I’m currently adapting to the environment. Vermont is a new experience for me, and I intend to fully explore the way things run here. It already feels different than NYC.

Q: Where are you originally from and where you live now?

Jon: My hometown is Maybrook, New York. I currently reside in Winooski.

Q: What are your interests & hobbies?

Jon: My biggest skill is photography, which I’ve enjoyed for 10 years now. I picked up snowboarding last year, self-taught through video lessons and today I’m doing eurocarves. Now looking to jump into the bicycling bandwagon.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Jon: On top of any mountain, above the clouds. It has to have a ton of snow and a ski lift. Just like this guy.

Q: What is one of the things on your bucket list?

Jon: The major one would be Esteem, which is a Middle-Ear Implant, that will basically boost my hearing capability and basically make my life easier by a million miles. Normal hearing levels with the option to power on or off.

Q: If you could take one physical item with you on a deserted island, what would it be?

Jon: Light Saber – It can make fire, it can cut things, it can protect you from danger, and they make great flashlights.

Q: If you could only eat one meal, for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Jon: Authentic Chinese Hot Pots from NYC! Tacos would be good too.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Jon. Everyone here at Burlington Bytes is really glad he joined the team as he is a talented, hard-working gentleman!

Now, almost six years later, we’ve grown into a core team of creative, hard working and talented individuals.  Speaking of creative and talented individuals, we are so happy to share with you that we have hired a new team member.

We welcome Aaron Silber, our newest production developer.  Aaron joins us after a year as Web Development Lead at Burlington-based Brandthropology.

Find Out More About Aaron:

The creative process and puzzle-like nature of building websites has captivated Aaron Silber for the better part of a decade. Creating innovative, clean, and engaging sites that target the growing demographic of mobile devices is one of Aaron’s biggest passions.

Aaron spent several of his school years in Burlington, and grew to love the state for its convenient outdoor escapes and expansive fiber network. In 2014, he relocated to Vermont from his native upstate New York.

He’s still waiting for flying cars and undersea cities.

Welcome Aaron!

We’re Excited To Welcome A New Member To Our Team!

Careers News

What a busy summer we’ve had! We are excited to share with you that our hard working team has launched quite a few websites over the past month, which include: Artisan Engineering, CC Outdoor Store, Raptis Rare Books & Furniture Weekend.  The CC Outdoor store & Raptis Rare Books sites were both major e-commerce sites that were wrapped up – one on Magento and the other on Woo-commerce/Wordpress.  Both of these projects involved heavy custom work and we take pride in considering ourselves experts in e-commerce website development. Luckily, we have the talent in-house to make jobs like this possible! One new talent we’d like to introduce you to, is our newest hire. We’d like to welcome Lilly Thompson!

Lilly grew up in North Ferrisburgh, VT. When she wasn’t outside enjoying all that the Green Mountain State has to offer, she could be found in front of her computer. Lilly attended the University of Vermont where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science this past May.  Lilly has been hired as our new Support Web Developer, where she will be primarily focused on front end development and daily support tasks. Lilly lives in Burlington with her boyfriend Nick and their two cats, Pika and Taco.

We are very happy that Lilly has joined the Burlington Bytes team and feel grateful we’ve added another woman to the mix!

Experienced LAMP Developer Wanted

We’re looking for an experienced LAMP developer to join our team full-time. Experience in WordPress is ideal, but not necessary if you’re capable of learning. We also do some Magento work, so experience on that platform would also be great. Work will be on one large project to start, and then a wide variety of projects as they come up. We have over 150 clients and advertise pretty heavily, so you’ll never know what’s next. Your work will be almost exclusively for the web, and it would be great to have a mix of front-end and back-end experience. Back-end examples would be migrating inventory between systems, setting up custom WP ad panels, dynamically creating product ads from products. Front-end work includes styling up responsive designs, using JS to make things move around on the screen, google mapping (maybe this is more back-end?) and much more. We’ve got a team of 11 with three experienced developers, so you’ll be in good company.

We have a fun office with a growing team and rapidly growing business, send your resume to careers@burlingtonbytes.com if you’re interested.

Entry Level Web Developer

Entry Level Web Developer

Burlington Bytes is looking for a full-time web developer, entry-level is okay, as long as you’re ready to learn. Most of the work will be in PHP/JS/HTML/CSS with Apache servers, MySQL databases and Git version control.  We build most of our sites in WordPress & Magento, but you should be comfortable in working in a variety of PHP frameworks and CMSs as we do have some clients that require custom work. Work will be a mix of front end and back end, including custom user interfaces and mobile/responsive design.   Ideally, you should able to interface with clients on occasion.  We have a portfolio of 100+ clients and are growing rapidly.  Casual work environment with a great team.  If you’re interested, send a resume and cover letter to careers@burlingtonbytes.com and we’ll be in touch.

WordPress Support & Production Specialist

WordPress Support & Production Specialist

We’re looking for an individual that’s very familiar with WordPress to join our team and assist us in building and supporting our portfolio of 90+ clients. This is essentially two positions rolled into one.  Your primary role will be helping us to complete support tasks for existing clients.  When the support box is empty, we’ll want you to help us to build new sites and implement the marketing campaigns around them.

We’re a pretty chill and open business.  You can expect to learn a lot about our operations and business, we’re not just going to sit you in a corner and expect you to complete tasks.  This position could be part time or full time based on the candidate.  Would be great for a college student or recent graduate, but don’t hesitate to get in touch. Compensation based on experience.

Our sites are primarily built in WordPress, so we’d want you to be very familiar with navigating the WP backend and how WP sites function.  You should have a good understanding of html/css, and ideally a bit of PHP and JS. Basically, we’re dealing with a pretty constant flow of support requests that are all over the board.  Calendars need updating, products need to be put on sale, email newsletter templates need designing, SSL certificates installed, pdfs uploaded, images resized, etc.    Expect the tasks to be all over the place, this will be a great crash course in online marketing. Experience with ZenDesk and Basecamp are a plus.

We’ll also want you to help with designing and building new websites for our clients. You should have a good eye for web design and be able to write valid and understandable html and css. Again, PHP and JS skills would also be a plus. We’d love it if you have a portfolio of sites that you’ve built and worked on.

Interested?  Send a cover letter and resume to pete@burlingtonbytes.com. Thanks!
